Frequently Asked Questions

Q01: What is DVD-Video?

A: DVD-Video is a consumer video format used to store digital video on DVD discs, and is currently the dominant consumer video format in Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. Discs using the DVD-Video specification require a DVD drive and a MPEG-2 decoder (e.g., a DVD player, or a computer DVD drive with a software DVD player). Commercial DVD movies are encoded using a combination of MPEG-2 compressed video and audio of varying formats (often multi-channel formats as described below). Typically, the data rate for DVD movies ranges from 3 Mbit/s to 9.5 Mbit/s, and the bit rate is usually adaptive. The DVD-Video specification was created by DVD Forum and can be obtained from DVD Format/Logo Licensing Corporation for a fee of $5,000. The specification is not publicly available, because every subscriber must sign a non-disclosure agreement. Certain information in the DVD Book is proprietary and confidential.

Q02: What are Blue-Ray DVDs?

A: Blu-Ray DVDs are optical discs that can only be read by specialized blue DVD lasers. The discs are the same size as a standard DVD. Blu-Ray DVDs feature true high-definition quality and sound along with interactive features. The discs can play video commentary alongside a movie, and load a menu over the movie while the DVD is still playing. The discs can also be produced with dual layers, allowing more content and special features.

Q03: What is VIDEO_TS?

A: VIDEO_TS, short for video transport stream, is one folder of most video DVDS. When you insert a video DVD into your computer, you can open the DVD and view the contents just like a folder on your hard drive. Most video DVDs have two folders in the root directory - AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. The VIDEO_TS folder contains all the DVD's video data and playback information, including .VOB (video object) files, .IFO (information) files and .BUP (backup) files.

Q04: I just want to backup my DVD on my PC. What is the best choice of the output format for me to choose? I just want to play it on my PC and I would like to get the smallest size with better quality.

A: Generally speaking, we recommend AVI output by our program. The default codec for AVI in our program is DivX, which can provide better quality as well as smaller output size. If you just want to backup your DVD on your hard drive, you'd better select AVI.

Q05: What is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?

A: DVD-R (DVD dash R) was developed by Pioneer. It is designed to be a recordable format compatible with DVD Video players and DVD ROM drives. This standard was approved by the DVD Forum and has been adopted by many DVD equipment manufacturers.

Due to the fact that such standards are based on numerous patents, where the licensing of these patents costs manufacturers who do not own the patents substantial royalties in order to produce compatible equipment or media, a separate consortium of manufacturers decided that their financial interests would be best served by developing a competing recordable format. This format is known as DVD+R. The consortium is known as the DVD+RW alliance.

Q06: I am not satisfied with the output file? How can I make it better?

A: The output file quality depends largely on the source file. You may choose a higher bit rate or modify settings like contrast, dimensions, length, and audio volume, etc., if the output one is not as good as the original one.
